Champions at the Ravenshoe/Mt Garnet Annual Prize shoot

On 5th October, the first day of the Ravenshoe/Mt Garnet Rifle Club shoot, Marty Lobert (a member of the Australian F-Open team who won the F-Class World Championships at Raton, New Mexico, USA, in August 2013), along with five other members of the Australian team were present to pay homage to Peter Smith, who was very much instrumental in the design and manufacture of the coaching/plotting system used by wind coaches David Stewart and David McNamara.  Marty presented Peter with an Australian team T-shirt signed by all members of the Australian team, an Australian team cap and a winning team gold medal presented by the American organizing committee.  Peter was also presented with a blown-up group photo of the whole Australian team.  The striking yellow colours of the team shirts really stood out and made a colourful picture with the gold medals gleaming in the sunlight.  It was a very touching ceremony expressing the team’s gratitude to their mentor.  Peter Smith was very honoured by the gesture.  Thanks Peter for an extraordinary contribution.
On Sunday 6th October, Cnr Shaaron Linwood took the opportunity to congratulate Marty Lobert, Shane Green, Steve Lazarus and Peter Smith on their great success in America.

Ravenshoe/Mt Garnet Rifle Club Annual Prize shoot 2013

The Ravenshoe/Mt Garnet Rifle Club held their Annual 2013 Prize Meeting (in conjunction with the Ravenshoe Torimba Festival) on 5th and 6th October with 38 shooters across five different disciplines attending from various clubs ranging from Mossman to Collinsville.  Despite rather stronger wind conditions than usual (which changed at a rapid rate), the weather was pleasant and some shooters managed good scores.  This year the Club put for the first time on a two-day shoot.
Steven Durham (Mareeba) took out the Grand Aggregate for Day 1 (300, 400 and 500 yards) in Target Rifle (TR1) Div. 1 from Robert Boulter (Atherton) and Mark Beecham (Mareeba).  In TR2 Div. 2 Malcolm McKellar triumphed over Neil Attwood (both from Mossman) and Josh Cox (Cairns).  In F-Open Marty Lobert (Cairns), in true world champion style, beat local Ravenshoe shooter Peter Burg and Peter Smith (Herberton). In F Standard 1 (FS1) Shane Green (Cairns) top scored for the day, with Stephen Lazarus (Cairns) beating John Lorimer (Townsville) by 3 centre bulls.  In FS2 three relative newcomers excelled.  Paul Padgett (Ravenshoe) took out his first OPM prize over Brenton O’Reilly (Ravenshoe), also in his first prize shoot, and Darren Canute  (Townsville).
The wind gods were even less clement on Day 2 (double 600 yards) and every shooter had to expend the maximum effort for every point. In TR1, Mark Beecham prevailed over Robert Boulter and Steve Durham. Mal McKellar proved too good for Neil Attwood and Gary Moss (Atherton) in TR 2. F-Open was taken out by Marty Lobert from Peter Smith and Peter Burg.  In FS1 Ian (Mick) Wood (Ravenshoe), Kathleen Chatfield (Ravenshoe) and Jim Blomfield (Bowen) managed better scores than their other competitors. Brenton O’Reilly prevailed over Vicki Cusick (Cairns) and Liz Wilson (Ravenshoe) in FS2.
Councillor Shaaron Linwood kindly presented the Grand Aggregate prizes to: TR1 Mark Beecham, Robert Boulter and Steve Durham.  TR2 Malcolm McKellar, Neil Attwood and Josh Cox. F-Open Marty Lobert, Peter Smith and Peter Burg.   FS1 Mick Wood, Shane Green and John Lorimer (Townsville).  FS2 Brenton O’Reilly, Paul Padgett and Vicki Cusick in her first prize meeting.  Ravenshoe/Mt Garnet Rifle Club would like to thank Councillor Linwood for her generous donation towards the running of this competition.
Sandy Wood did a fantastic job with catering for all the meals provided during the shoot and the Club presented a plant as thank for all her hard work. All the participants agreed that the catering was top quality and are all hoping to enjoy it again next year.
The Club would like to thank the Tableland Regional Council for sponsoring the shade protection and all the other sponsors for their donations towards the running of the competition. In particular: Paronella Park, Atherton International Club, Cairns Tropical Zoo, Ravenshoe Hardware, Ravenshoe Tyreright, Ravenshoe Club Hotel, Bertoldo Electrical, Mt Garnet Tyres and Parts and Tolga Butchery.
Cnr Linwood and many participants congratulated the Club for hosting such a successful weekend and for the high standard that the Club has achieved in the preparation of the Ravenshoe Range, which is confirmed by the world standard shooters who attended the event.
